Rice, Evans, and Tony C: Why The Red Sox Should Retire Their Numbers
MIKEYMOMO~RSM~ found this 2 months ago on www.baseballdigestdaily.com
In a story that should be required reading for every Red Sox fan,The Remy Report gives us a piece by Michael Frissore, who contributed this to Baseball Digest Daily. Just read the title and you'll know what it's all about...In January 2009 former Boston Red Sox left-fielder Jim Rice will either finally be voted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame or he will have missed in his last chance at Cooperstown. Rice received 72.2 percent of the Hall of Fame vote in 2008, just 2.8 points shy of the percentage required to win induction. The debate continues regarding whether Rice is Hall material, and we will soon find out what the committee says. But this last vote will also decide something else: whether the Sox will retire the 16-year veteran’s number.

"The Red Sox have entered a new era. They've finally won, not one, but two World Series titles, and broke the legendary Curse of the Bambino. They don’t need to be so stingy with the number retiring anymore." - why in the world would that matter? Now that we've won you want to start retiring numbers left and right, give me a break guy! Enjoyed the article, except that!

Do it! Ron's blog the other night asked who was best right fielder for the Sox. Every vote was Dewey I'm pretty sure, if not, almost all were! The other 2 are no brainers. Playing for the Sox cost Tony C more than any other player, and Rice, is Rice!!!

I may be in the minority on this one but I think the fewer retired numbers the better. Not to diminish what Tony C., Evans, and Rice did but you have to draw the line somewhere. If not then you will have to make the case for other players, and it can get out of hand. I think the rules as they are, are just fine.
