Why the Sox Will Finish #1
September 4, 2008
Because the blog and Wendell's response was sent off the front page, I decided to post another blog as a reply to a response from Wendell, on another blog (confused yet?). Well here is what Wendell said about my claims that the Sox would win the East:
"Moose will beat the Rays tonight, but Rays will take next two. Keep the Faith doesn't mean send reason on vacation; this Rays team will win the AL East. But wait, the Sox will take the WC and then mop up on LAA. Rays will have no trouble defeating Chisox. That means that Rays and Sox end up in ALCS, and that's where the Sox really begin to shine. But, really, Rays not showing any signs of slowing down. Post season is different....brazen statements to the contrary, Rays take AL East"
Now, my dear Wendell, I do agree with you that the Rays should be able to handle the Orioles (in the last series of the season) with relative ease, HOWEVER, the Rays are not going to have an easy series (other than that one) for the rest of the year. My statement of "best team in the AL" is not "brazen" nor was my "reason on vacation", and here is why I could be very right in my prediction:
The Rays have one of the toughest September schedules remaining, they could EASILY lose the remaining series with the Sox, Yanks, Chi Sox, Jays, and Twins...it isn't far fetched to say that the Sox will win 4 of 6 (at worst), that they Yankees will win 4 of 6 (at worst), that the Twins at least split 2-2, that the Chi Sox split, and that the Jays take 2 of 3.
History shows that teams that have pitchers that throw 200+ innings in the regular season, tend to fade down the stretch and limp into the playoffs (CC Sabathia, last season anyone??), and the Rays have Garza, Shields, Sonnanstine, and I believe Jackson who all should have 200+ innings, they also have injury prone Scott Kazmir, and Troy Percival. I am sticking to what I have said all season, those guys have been pitching WAAAAY over their heads and it will show in the clutch!
The Rays offense is NOT great! They have Pena (who does hit home runs, but also K's a lot, their best hitter is batting .289 (Navarro) and he only has 350 ABs.
This Ray team has been too lucky for too long, and it will start (and has started) to show! The Sox are RED HOT! The SOX are getting HEALTHY! And the Rays and Angels had better WATCH THEIR BACKS because WE ARE COMING FOR THEM!!!
LETS GO RED SOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!
